How to keep a free backup proxy subscription in Clash and v2rayN

If you run your own node, sooner or later it gets blocked, the VPS goes down, or the IP gets throttled. A second subscription that sits quietly in your client as a fallback saves you from scrambling at the worst moment. This guide shows how to set that up in Clash (Mihomo) and v2rayN.

1. Add the backup subscription

In Clash / Mihomo, add the backup as a second
proxy-provider
next to your own nodes. In v2rayN, open Subscription group → Subscription group settings, add the URL, then run Update subscription.

2. Fallback and url-test groups in Clash (Mihomo)

proxy-groups:
- name: Auto
type: fallback
proxies: [MyNode, Backup-Best]
url: https://www.gstatic.com/generate_204
interval: 300
- name: Backup-Best
type: url-test
use: [backup]
url: https://www.gstatic.com/generate_204
interval: 300
tolerance: 50

fallback
keeps traffic on your own node while it answers the health check and switches to the backup the moment it fails.
url-test
picks the lowest-latency server inside the backup subscription.

3. Switching in v2rayN

Select all servers in the backup group, run Test real delay, sort by latency and set the fastest one as active. When your own node comes back, switch back with one click. Re-test every few days, since latency changes.

4. Tips

Keep the health-check interval at 300 seconds or more to avoid needless switching.

Put the backup last in rule-based groups so it only carries traffic when needed.

Update subscriptions weekly so dead servers drop out.

A free option for the backup slot

Roxi works well as the backup: the free plan gives 30 minutes per day at full speed, which is enough to get through an outage. Paid plans are VIP 3.57 USD per 30 days (200GB) and SVIP 7.14 USD per 30 days (500GB), and new users get an exclusive offer plus a free trial. Questions: support@roxi.cc.
